100 HMA (HideMyAss) Alternative VPN And Proxy Sites In 2022

HMA VPN (previously HideMyAss) is a VPN provider with a long and colorful history established in the United Kingdom. While it is still a popular VPN with a large user base, it did not perform well in our HMA VPN review testing.
HMA is now owned by Avast, a cybersecurity company, and it still maintains a sizable user base. Actual testing of the VPN servers and VPN apps yielded inconsistent results, making it impossible for us to recommend HMA VPN to our readers.
Benefits
- Apps that are easy to use and have strong encryption
- A large network of servers
- Support via live chat
- A “no-log VPN” is now available.
Drawbacks
- There are no monthly subscription choices available.
- Isn’t suitable for streaming
- Data sharing has a tumultuous past.
- Jurisdiction of the United Kingdom (bad for privacy)
- A faulty kill switch (with IP leaks)
VPN encryption with HMA
HMA employs industry-standard AES 256-bit encryption, which is deployed on Windows and Android devices via OpenVPN, and on Mac OS and iOS via IPSec/IKEv2:
Only the greatest encryption standard, 256-bit AES, is used by HMA. We use the OpenVPN protocol in Galois Counter Mode (AES-256-GCM) on Windows and Android, with 4096-bit RSA keys for handshakes and SHA256 authentication. To provide the best compatibility on Mac and iOS, we use IKEv2/IPsec, which is built on top of Apple’s own stack.
While IPSec/IKEv2 is a secure VPN protocol, OpenVPN is the industry standard. As a result, it would be ideal if the OpenVPN protocol was also supported on Mac OS. The iOS operating system is limited to IKEv2 in various ways. The WireGuard VPN protocol is another new VPN protocol that promises better speeds and improved security. WireGuard is not supported by HMA at this moment.
If you’re using Mac OS and wish to use the OpenVPN protocol (which is suggested), check out my guide to the best VPN for Mac OS to see what other options you have.
The HMA VPN server network is extensive.
With “1000+ VPN servers in 290+ locations across 190+ countries,” Hide My Ass claims to have “the largest VPN network.” When you look at their server map and location list, you’ll notice several unusual locations. HMA claims to have servers in North Korea, for example:
I can tell you without a doubt that HMA does not have physical servers in North Korea. Instead, they use virtual server locations, which we’ll go over in more detail later.
Leaving aside the virtual server issue, HMA still has a sizable server network. Some users may find this useful if they desire or require IP addresses in remote regions, such as North Korea.
Logs from the HMA VPN
HMA VPN made the switch to become a no-logs VPN service earlier this year. HideMyAss was notorious for logging user data and disclosing it to authorities before this adjustment, as we’ll discuss in the disadvantages section below.
HMA VPN’s former logging policy
Yes, HMA preserves connection logs, which include the time it took to connect, disconnect, and how much bandwidth was used. This is done to avoid misuse as well as to aid in diagnosis.
They were also logging IP addresses, as stated in the Privacy Statement.
There are no monthly subscription plans available.
One oddity about HideMyAss is that they have removed the option of paying on a month-to-month basis. HMA VPN, on the other hand, only offers a one- or three-year subscription option.
Users who do not want to commit to a long-term strategy may find this frustrating.
All programs, thankfully, come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Similar to a free trial VPN service, this provides you plenty of time to test out the VPN and cancel your subscription if it doesn’t work out. They also have a 7-day free trial available.
I inquired of one of their chat agents as to why the monthly plan, which I had previously seen on their website, had been withdrawn. It was in reaction to client requests, he explained. He also revealed that those who still want the monthly subscription, have a hidden connection (you can ask for support about this).
HMA is in the center of the pack when it comes to price. Even with the three-year plan for $4.29 per month, I wouldn’t call it a cheap VPN. At $6.99 per month for a year, the one-year plan isn’t exactly cheap.
Alternatives to HideMyAss
Alternatives to HideMyAss abound online, however not all of them provide fast web browsing while concealing your IP address from prying eyes. This is one of the reasons why we’ve compiled a list of suggested proxy and VPN providers. The service in issue is one of the most popular in its industry, yet it isn’t flawless, just like any other popular product. The frequent disconnection and reconnection are one of the most prevalent complaints we’ve heard, which is a severe problem for anyone trying to surf anonymously because your IP address is exposed during the drop.

HMA is not compatible with Hulu, DAZN, or HBO Max.
Regrettably, HMA’s streaming capabilities have recently deteriorated. Hulu, DAZN, and HBO Max are no longer supported by the VPN.
Using a VPN with HBO Max and DAZN has become one of the most popular VPN activities. We tried NordVPN on both systems and it worked flawlessly.
Is HMA a good torrenting VPN?
HMA VPN has a horrible reputation when it comes to torrenting. This was due to the fact that it gathered user logs and IP addresses, which it might possibly share with third parties. HMA VPN would also forward DMCA concerns to the user directly, which was simple because they kept logs.
HMA VPN, on the other hand, no longer keeps logs and now offers P2P services for torrenting.
Conclusion of the HideMyAss HMA VPN review And Alternatives
Overall, HMA VPN is a solid VPN service, but it pales in comparison to some of the industry’s other prominent names. While HMA has made strides in some areas, such as the no-logs audit, there is still a need for improvement in others, such as speed and security (leak protection).
You can give it a try if you only need a basic VPN and don’t mind the higher fees, lousy jurisdiction, and other downsides we describe. After all, all programs come with a full 30-day money-back guarantee.
Unless you are dead set on using HMA VPN, there are a few more excellent VPNs to consider.
