What is Hulu?
Everyone has heard of Hulu, and there’s a good chance you’ve used their service at some point. With almost 25 million US customers, the online juggernaut shares second place with Amazon as the most widely used premium streaming service. Beginning in 2008, Hulu provided both a free and a paid streaming service. Since then, they’ve switched to a subscription-only business model, and it’s working out well. From original series to live TV to vintage Christmas films, their library has it all.
Disney acquired Hulu in 2019, which bodes well for their future. They have more of the films that you know will continue to produce excellent original work. Additionally, everyone can view at their own pace with up to 6 persons per account. I’ll get some fundamental information out of the way before I get into some specifics regarding the website.
- Prices that are reasonable for any budget
- This is a cable killer because it includes live TV.
- the choice to combine ESPN+ and Disney+
- With the Hulu app ecosystem, you can watch from anywhere.
- Too many commercials are on Hulu Basic.
- Home device geo-locking is unpleasant.
Basic, Premium, Basic + Live TV, and Premium + Live TV are the four Hulu plan categories.
Basic Access to Hulu’s collection on up to two screens simultaneously is included with this entry-level package, which costs $5.99 per month. Pre-, during-, and post-program advertisements are standard in the basic package.
The $11.99/month premium subscription grants you access to Hulu’s collection without advertisements, which, in my opinion, makes it worthwhile. Later, I’ll explain.
Standard + Live TV For $44.99 per month, Basic+ includes live TV and the basic package with advertisements (with ads). ideal for watching local stations’ live sports.
Live TV + Premium You may access the ad-free library and live TV for $54.99 per month with Premium+. Ads do appear on live TV, though.
Add-ons: Unlimited simultaneous displays for $9.99 per month. Other premium streaming services including HBO, Showtime, Cinema, and STARZ range in price from $8.99 to $14.99 per month. – $4.99 to $9.99 monthly for a variety of live TV addons, including DVR and access to Spanish-language programming. – Hulu Basic, ESPN+, and Disney+ are bundled for $12.99 per month.
Shared accounts are common. These objects simply operate in this manner. Hulu permits simultaneous streaming on two screens and up to six profiles per account. You can add simultaneous streaming on all six profiles for $10 per month if you don’t want to send your friend the awkward text asking them to stop using your account. Personally, I don’t believe it should be an additional fee, but it is helpful.
Personal and Intuitive Interface
Hulu makes it simple to use their platform. After logging in, you can immediately begin watching a show you interrupted or search for something new. Scrolling through the pre-made lists of recommendations based on shows you already like will allow you to discover everything. Despite the fact that other platforms are headed in that way, Hulu excels at it by incorporating live TV alternatives alongside its library of content. In order to help you remember what is on and what is coming up on live TV, Hulu will provide some suggestions when you log in to finish watching that episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.
I adore this function since it provides the platform’s segmented content coherence. There isn’t a single location for live broadcasts, another for movies, and a third for TV. It’s a one-stop-shop with a fantastic perspective of everything going on. With Hulu’s suggestions, you won’t have to search for very long even if you don’t discover what you’re looking for right away. Even the ideas are tailored to each account’s profile. You won’t receive a tonne of recommendations to watch the most recent Chopped episode if your pal is extremely into Gordan Ramsey.
The Good That Hulu Does
Everyone can access a big library on Hulu. I obsess over Shark Tank and watch every new episode as soon as it airs. However, if I miss one, I can catch it the following day on demand.
And it’s shockingly simple to find what you’re looking for. To search the library, simply click the large magnifying glass at the top of the screen. The search is rapid and provides options if they don’t have the exact title, as you would anticipate from a premium service.
I recently felt like watching the beloved Halloween film Hocus Pocus. Unfortunately, that is a movie that Hulu does not have available. However, they advised me to look through their “Huluween” collection.
I was able to access their extensive choice of titles with only one click. They were arranged according to originals, classics, family-friendly movies, winners of film festivals, and so on.
Even though I couldn’t watch what I wanted at first, I ultimately watched The Corpse Bride, another family-friendly film. Although I was aware of it, Hulu’s list of fantastic movies to see around Halloween recommended a movie-night favorite.
Additionally, you can pack a lot of stuff now that Disney recently acquired Hulu. Hulu Basic, ESPN+, and Disney+ are all available for $13 per month. You have a few options, so even if you can’t find something on one platform, you can still discover the next movie.
Parental controls are the next admirable thing Hulu does well
I was hunting for a Hocus Pocus substitute while signing onto my profile. The recommended movies for Huluween would have given me a few nightmares if I had children who were too young for Rated-R content. To avoid those circumstances, Hulu allows you to create a profile just for children that hides mature content.
Instead, it compiles a sizable list of family-friendly stuff. The kid’s experience on Hulu feels as limitless as the unrestricted content thanks to the vast library.
And last, I adore the remote app. You may stream the entire library from your phone to your TV with the Hulu app. If you already own a Chromecast that is linked to your TV, you may control Hulu without having to log in on your TV.
Best Hulu Alternatives
Both live TV programming and video-on-demand content are available on Hulu. There is a tonne of classic TV shows and movies available on the service, and frequently, they also include episodes of shows that are presently airing. Hulu has been able to gain a lot of value by assuming contracts that Netflix has lost and offering a Live TV programming package. However, not everyone enjoys Hulu because their player can be a resource hog on the Internet and the live TV subscription can be pricey. What other options do you have if you don’t like Hulu too much? a lot, in fact. We’ll show you the greatest Hulu substitute if you continue reading below. Here are some of our favorites.

What Hulu Can Improve Upon
They can enhance a few things, other than adding Hocus Pocus to the Hulu collection.
First off, each Hulu account is limited to one home device. Account sharing is commonplace for me and everyone I know who has Hulu. I’ll pay for Hulu if you pay for Netflix, is a favor between friends. Hulu only permits one “home device” to be operational at once and doesn’t give a damn about this exercise in developing relationships.
For instance, because my Xbox serves as the “home device,” my friend who recently purchased a new smart TV with Hulu built-in was unable to sign in to Hulu. You are only permitted to change locations on Hulu four times a year, so you cannot continuously switch.
However, this does not prevent account sharing. There is still a way to broadcast content from a computer to a television, so account sharing is still possible. Hulu merely makes the procedure a little more annoying.
The commercials come next
I understand that Disney spent a lot of money to acquire Hulu and that they want to recoup their costs. However, Hulu Basic’s amount of advertising before, during, and after a show can make even a monk lose patience.
I am aware that live TV includes advertisements. However, I anticipate few interruptions if I have to pay a monthly price to use Hulu’s digital collection. Too many adverts appear during shows. Try streaming Hulu on a computer with Ad Blocker if you truly want to see how annoying the adverts are. Hulu prevents you from skipping the adverts by making you wait through them in quiet.
You’re an internet native if you’re anything like me. I’m not used to having to pay for or watch advertisements. All of my devices have ad blockers that protect me from the unpleasant realities of live TV. Because to the frequent ad interruptions, I decided to upgrade my subscription to Premium. I’ll end by saying this. Hulu provides excellent service. Contract discussions most certainly led to my complaints about Hulu. But in my perspective, usability and user experience are really important.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hulu a good investment?
The extra $6 per month to watch shows without commercial breaks is definitely worthwhile if you frequently use Hulu or if you’ve grown accustomed to Netflix’s no-ads approach and can’t stomach them. Additionally, the total price of $13 is still cheaper than the current monthly cost of $15.50 for Netflix’s Standard plan.
Which is preferable, Hulu or Netflix?
Recap: Hulu is inferior to Netflix. Netflix is the streaming service you should choose if you want a lot of hours of enjoyment. Since you can stream on up to four devices with Netflix instead of just two with Hulu, it’s ideal for families.
With Amazon Prime, is Hulu free?
Hulu does not include Amazon Prime, no. To access the on-demand selection of films and television series, you must purchase Hulu individually.
What television channels does Hulu offer?
Popular entertainment channels including BET, Bravo, Comedy Central, E!, Freeform, Lifetime, MTV, OWN, TBS, TNT, VH1, and USA are among the more than 75 live and on-demand channels available. family-friendly television networks including Boomerang, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Universal Kids, and Cartoon Network.
Hulu is a need for me.
I only maintained cable for live sports because I detested paying for it. With the Premium + Live TV bundle, I can now watch live sports on Hulu from anywhere. However, the majority of people can survive without Live TV, making Hulu a simple decision. The best piece of advice I can give is to spend the $12 for an account that is ad-free. Personally, I believe the additional funds are absolutely worthwhile. Every month, the typical person will see about 25 hours of ads. You can escape that for $6.
But if you don’t like advertisements as much as I do, I’d definitely suggest Hulu’s most recent bundle. Hulu Basic, ESPN+, and Disney+ are all available for $13 per month. That is one of the best offerings from a streaming service, in my opinion.
Hulu has decreased costs and expanded the number of shows you can watch in an era where Netflix appears to increase its prices every year.
